Micronutrients & Supplements

Minerals are compounds that can be found in both plant and animal foods, and like vitamins do not have calories. Minerals are in two groups; Major and Trace minerals. The Major minerals include calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride and sulfur. Trace minerals include iron, zinc, copper, manganese, chromium and fluoride.
Calcium helps with bone health and muscle contraction and regulation of blood pressure. Phosphorous helps with bone health and cell structure. Magnesium helps with muscle relaxation, ATP and protein synthesis. Sodium and potassium help with fluid and electrolyte balance and muscle contraction. Iron helps with energy metabolism and Zinc helps with wound healing, growth and immune health.
Supplements are required to be natural, or at least present in nature. They may be a synthetic, but only if it is a replica of a natural substance, ex; Ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
The FDA does not provide approval for supplements, however they do provide guidelines. Products containing macronutrients or micronutrients need to be listed at the top of the supplement facts panel. Furthermore, if a daily value (DV) is established, it must be listed as a percentage of the established DV. There are third-party companies that test for quality and banned substances. Some include Informed Choice, NSF for Sport, BSCG (Banned Substances Control Group) and USP (United States Pharmacopeia).
